How to wind a mechanical watch

A mechanical watch is powered by a mainspring. You wind it by turning the crown, which stores energy in the spring.

If it's a manual-wind watch

1. Remove the watch from your wrist (this reduces stress on the stem).

2. Make sure the crown is in its normal position (fully pushed in).

3. Turn the crown clockwise (away from you when viewing the dial) in smooth, gentle motions.

4. Continue until you feel noticeable resistance. Do not force it further. Most manual watches require about 20–40 turns from empty.

If it's an automatic watch

Automatic watches can also be wound by hand.

1. Keep the crown in its normal position.

2. Turn the crown clockwise about 20–30 turns.

3. Wear the watch regularly. The movement of your wrist will keep it wound throughout the day.

Note: Many automatic watches have a slipping clutch, so they cannot be "overwound" through the rotor. However, you should still avoid forcing the crown if it feels unusually resistant.

• Wind your watch once a day, ideally at the same time, if it's a manual watch.

• Avoid winding while setting the date or time if your watch's manual advises against it.

• If the watch has been sitting unused for several days, give it 20–30 manual turns before wearing it.

How do you know it's fully wound?

• Manual watch: The crown becomes firm and stops turning comfortably. Stop immediately.

• Automatic watch: There is usually no clear stopping point. About 20–30 turns is enough to start the movement; normal wear keeps it powered.
